What is Point of Sale (POS)?

Point of Sale (POS) is most widely used system, as it is being used by retailers. There are two type of POS, General Purpose and Specialized.
General purpose POS is for Grocery Retailers or retailers selling few general products or services, like Fuel Station, Tire Shop, Vegetable Shop, Bakery, etc.
Special purpose POS are for specific requirements like Restaurant / Hotel, Medical / Drug Store, Machinery / Equipment Seller, Tailors, Service providers, etc. General POS are generally low cost, while specialized POS are higher on cost, depending on criticality and complexity. Generally, POS provides list of Products with Price, generation of Bill with payment receipt options. Products / Items should be searchable via Item / Product Code, or Item / Product Name.
Perception that POS is Barcode / QR code enabled or not is actually misperception and normally POS vendor take advantage of buyer's ignorance and charge extra for it. In actual, Barcode / QR code scanner can even work with Notepad, Browsers, Excel, Word , etc. The purpose is only sent back complete code / name by scanning which if not available enter by end user using keyboard.
